How To Reach Tam Dil Lake

Saitual, Mizoram, India
Mythological Origin and Name: Tam Dil (or ?am Dil) is a beautiful reservoir lake whose name literally translates to the 'Lake of Mustard' (an?am means mustard, Dil means lake in Mizo). According to a beloved local folklore, the lake was formed after a widowed woman's new husband uprooted a giant mus tard plant, which the spirit of her deceased husband had told her to cherish, causing water to immediately flow out and fill the valley. Ecological Development: While the origin is shrouded in myth, the lake is officially maintained and developed by the Fisheries Department of the Government of Mizoram as an important pisciculture center for fish rearing. This also enhances its natural beauty and ecological health. Tourism and Recreation: The Tourism Department, often in partnership with private resorts like ZX Eden, maintains the surrounding area as a popular holiday resort and picnic spot. It is one of the most frequently visited and beautiful lakes in the state, offering recreational activities like boating and kayaking. Biodiversity Hotspot: The lake and its surrounding thick forest are part of the Indo-Myanmar Biodiversity Hotspot and are a haven for biodiversity researchers. New and unique species of amphibians and reptiles have been discovered here, including the ?am Dil leaf litter frog (Leptobrachella tamdil) and a novel species of snake, Smithophis mizoramensis, highlighting its unique ecological value.
