The Traditional Ship Building Yard in Mandvi is a living testament to the region's rich maritime history. For over 400 years, skilled craftsmen have been building massive wooden cargo ships, known as Dhows, entirely by hand. This industry was established in the 16th century under the patronage of t he Maharaos of Kutch. Unlike modern shipyards that use heavy machinery and computer-aided designs, the shipbuilders here rely on age-old techniques passed down through generations. They use manual tools like adzes, hand drills, and saws to shape massive planks of wood. Most of the wood used today is Sal wood imported from Malaysia and Burma, as it is resistant to rot and bending. The ships built here can weigh anywhere from 200 to 2,000 tonnes. It is a fascinating sight to see these skeletal wooden giants rising from the mud of the riverbank. The craftsmen, mostly from the Kharva and Muslim communities, work without formal blueprints, using mental calculations and traditional measurements. These ships are eventually used for trade across the Arabian Sea, reaching ports in the Middle East and East Africa. A visit to this yard offers a rare glimpse into a vanishing craft that has survived the age of steel and steam. It is not just a workplace but a heritage site where the air is thick with the scent of sawdust and fish oil used for sealing the wood.

How to Reach

By Air: Fly to Bhuj Airport (BHJ), which is the nearest domestic airport with flights from Mumbai and Ahmedabad.

By Train: Reach Bhuj Railway Station and then take a bus or taxi. The journey takes about 1. 5 hours through scenic Kutchi landscapes.

By Road: State highways connect Mandvi to Bhuj (60 KMS) and Gandhidham (100 KMS). The roads are in excellent condition.

By Local Transport: The yard is within walking distance from the Mandvi bus stand. Auto-rickshaws are readily available throughout the town.
