How To Reach Vattakottai Fort

Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, India:
Historical Coastal Defense: Vattakottai Fort, which literally translates to "Circular Fort" in Tamil, is a historical seaside fortress located approximately 7 KMS north of Kanyakumari town. It was constructed primarily in the 18th century as a pivotal coastal defense point for the erstwhile Travanco re Kingdom. Its strategic position was vital for protecting the kingdom's territory from potential sea invasions, especially those coming from the Bay of Bengal and the eastern coastline. The original structure is believed to have been a simpler construction, possibly dating back to the Pandya era, as evidenced by a fish motif (the Pandya emblem) found on some walls. However, the major renovation and strengthening of the fort, giving it the imposing structure seen today, occurred during the reign of King Marthanda Varma (1729–1758). The Dutch Connection: The fort's transformation into a granite marvel is largely credited to the military engineering of Captain Eustachius De Lannoy, a Dutch naval commander who was defeated by the Travancore forces at the Battle of Colachel in 1741. Impressed by his skill, King Marthanda Varma appointed him as the Chief of the Travancore Army. De Lannoy was instrumental in modernizing the kingdom's defenses, with the Vattakottai Fort being a prime example of his work, employing massive granite blocks for its robust walls and bastions. This fort marks the northernmost boundary of the kingdom's formidable coastal defense line and the last major fort built by the Travancore rulers. Current Status: Spread over an area of approximately 3.5 acres, the fort is now a protected historical monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Visitors are drawn not only by its rich history but also by the stunning, panoramic views it offers of the meeting point of the Western Ghats mountains and the blue expanse of the Bay of Bengal. The fort’s unique feature is a portion of its wall that extends directly into the sea, providing a comprehensive surveillance and defense advantage. The atmosphere is generally quiet and peaceful, offering a calm historical retreat away from the main bustle of Kanyakumari town center.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest airport is Trivandrum (TRV), which is approximately 100 KMS away. From Trivandrum, a taxi is the best option to reach the fort directly via the National Highway and then the East Coast Road (ECR). The drive takes about 3 hours.

By Train: The fort is about 8 KMS from the Kanyakumari Railway Station (CAPE). The most convenient way to reach the fort is by hiring an auto-rickshaw or taxi from the station. A dedicated taxi will take approximately 15-20 minutes.

By Road: Vattakottai Fort is located directly on the East Coast Road (ECR), making it easily accessible from Kanyakumari town (7 KMS). Local buses run on this route, but an auto-rickshaw or taxi hired from the town center is the quickest and most direct way. This is an excellent spot to visit via a scooter or bike if you have rented one, as the coastal road is scenic.

By Local Transport: From the main Kanyakumari bus stand, one can take a local bus heading North along the ECR and alight at the Vattakottai bus stop, followed by a short walk. Negotiate the fare with auto-rickshaws before starting the journey from the town center.
