Kalugumalai

Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, India
Kalugumalai is a spectacular archaeological site featuring three distinct monuments: the monolithic Vettuvan Koil, the Kalugumalai Jain Beds, and the Kalugasalamoorthy Temple. The name means "Hill of the Vulture," and the site dates back to the 8th century CE. The Vettuvan Koil is a Hindu temple de dicated to Shiva, carved out of a single rock from the top down, similar to the Kailasa Temple at Ellora. The Jain Beds contain over 150 relief sculptures of Tirthankaras, making it one of the most important Jain sites in South India. At the base of the hill lies the Kalugasalamoorthy Temple, a rock-cut shrine dedicated to Lord Muruga. The entire complex is a masterpiece of early Pandyan architecture and art. The hill itself offers panoramic views of the surrounding plains. It is a protected monument under the Department of Archaeology and a UNESCO-worthy heritage site.
