Sri Vaikuntam Temple

Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, India
This ancient Hindu temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, worshipped here as Vaikuntanatha. It is the first among the nine Navathirupathi temples and is a part of the 108 Divya Desams. The temple is deeply connected to the Sun God, Surya, and is located on the scenic banks of the Tamirabarani River. Le gends tell of how Lord Vishnu appeared here to recover the stolen Vedas and protect a thief named Kaladushana, leading to the name Kallapiran. The spiritual aura of the temple is profound, attracting thousands of devotees who seek blessings for marriage, education, and relief from planetary doshas. The sanctum remains a site of immense peace, where the standing deity holds a mace and is sheltered by the hoods of the serpent Adishesha. This temple served as a strategic fort during the historical battles between the British and the local freedom fighter Veerapandiya Kattabomman. Visitors often feel a deep sense of historical and spiritual continuity within these sacred granite walls.
