Kulasekarapattinam Mutharamman Temple

Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, India
This 300-year-old temple is a unique spiritual landmark dedicated to Goddess Mutharamman and Lord Gnanamoorthiswarar. Built during the reign of King Maravarman Kulasekaran, it is situated on the shores of the Bay of Bengal. The temple is world-renowned for its Dasara (Dussehra) festival, which is t he second-largest in India after Mysore, attracting over a million devotees. A unique feature of this temple is that the Shiva and Shakti deities are housed together on the same pedestal, facing North. Devotees often visit to seek cures for skin ailments like smallpox, locally called "Muthu," which gives the Goddess her name. The temple atmosphere is electric with devotion, especially as pilgrims take various "Avatars" of gods, demons, and animals to fulfill their vows. The proximity to the beach allows for the grand Soorasamharam (slaying of the demon) to take place right on the sand, creating a spectacular sight of faith and culture.
