Kikruma Village

Phek, Nagaland, India
A Historical Stronghold: Kikruma Village is one of the largest and most historically significant villages in the Phek district. It gained historical prominence during the British era when the villagers put up a fierce resistance against the British expeditionary forces in the 19th century. Today, th e village is a symbol of Naga bravery and resilience. It is architecturally famous for its massive stone monuments and traditional stone walls that crisscross the village, giving it a unique, fortress-like appearance. The village is inhabited by the Chakhesang Naga tribe, who are known for their expert agricultural techniques and rich oral traditions. Walking through Kikruma, one can see numerous "memorial stones" erected to honor the dead or celebrate successful feasts of merit. These stones are meticulously placed and have stood for generations. The village is also known for its "terraced water" systems, where water from mountain streams is diverted through bamboo pipes to irrigate the fields. The community is very tight-knit, and visitors can witness the "Morung" system, which still plays a role in passing down tribal knowledge to the younger generation. The views from the village outskirts are spectacular, looking out over the rolling hills of the Phek and Kohima districts. For travelers interested in military history and tribal sociology, Kikruma offers a deep dive into the warrior past of the Nagas and their transition into a peaceful, agrarian society.
