Shilloi Lake

Phek, Nagaland, India
Shilloi Lake is undoubtedly the most famous natural landmark in the Phek district and the largest natural lake in Nagaland. Located at the foot of the Patkai range along the Myanmar border, the lake is uniquely shaped like a giant human footprint. To the local people, Shilloi is a sacred site, often referred to as the "Lake of Spirits." Legend has it that the spirit of a holy child resides in the depths of the lake, and for this reason, fishing or swimming in the lake was traditionally forbidden. The water is remarkably still and reflects the surrounding pine-covered hills like a mirror. The area is a haven for biodiversity, attracting various migratory birds, including the majestic Siberian Cranes, during the winter months. The drive to the lake is an adventure in itself, passing through some of the most remote and beautiful parts of the Indo-Myanmar borderland. The environment around the lake is incredibly peaceful, offering a level of tranquility that is rare in the modern world. Small wooden cottages have been built near the shore to accommodate travelers who wish to spend the night and experience the lake's mystical atmosphere under the moonlight. The surrounding forests are perfect for short treks and bird-watching expeditions. Despite its distance from the main towns, Shilloi Lake remains a top priority for any traveler visiting Phek, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, folklore, and serenity. It is a place where nature and legend are inextricably linked, creating a truly magical experience.
