Meenmutty Waterfalls

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India
Meenmutty Waterfalls at Kallar is a hidden paradise located on the way to the Ponmudi hill station. The name 'Meenmutty' comes from the Malayalam words 'meen' (fish) and 'mutty' (blocked), referring to the fact that fish cannot swim further up due to the rocky terrain. The waterfall is reached via a 2 KM trek through dense tropical forests starting from the Kallar bridge. The trek itself is a major attraction, offering a chance to see rare birds, butterflies, and diverse flora. The trail follows the path of the Vamanapuram River, with crystal clear water flowing over smooth pebbles and massive boulders. There are several small pools along the way where visitors can take a refreshing dip. The main waterfall is a three-tiered cascade that drops with great force, especially during the post-monsoon months. The forest department manages the area, ensuring it remains an eco-friendly zone. Plastic is strictly monitored, and the trail is well-maintained with signboards. The area is surrounded by the lush Western Ghats, providing a cool and misty atmosphere even during the summer. It is an ideal spot for nature lovers and adventure seekers who want to escape the city's noise. The sound of the rushing water combined with the chirping of birds creates a meditative environment. Unlike its namesake in Wayanad, this Meenmutty is more accessible for a day trip from the capital city. It remains one of the most pristine eco-tourism spots in Southern Kerala.
