Lansdowne, Uttarakhand, India
Honoring Garhwali Heroes: The Garhwal Rifles Regimental War Memorial is a solemn and poignant monument erected to honor the immense sacrifices made by the brave soldiers of the Garhwal Rifles regiment in various wars and conflicts since the regiment's inception in 1887. This memorial is the emotiona l and spiritual center of the Garhwal Rifles Regimental Centre (GRRC) in Lansdowne. It stands as an eternal symbol of pride, valor, and remembrance for the regiment's distinguished history, which includes serving bravely in both World Wars and all subsequent Indo-Pak conflicts and peacekeeping missions. Historical Commission and Inauguration: The monument was formally established and inaugurated on November 11, 1923, by the then Commander-in-Chief of India, Lord Rawlinson of Trent. Its date of inauguration (Armistice Day) holds significant historical value, marking it as one of the oldest and most respected regimental memorials in India. It serves not only to commemorate the fallen but also to educate the general public and regimental recruits about the rich military heritage of the Garhwal region. The Unknown Soldier Statue: A key highlight of the memorial is the striking bronze statue of an "Unknown Soldier" standing in a defiant and resolute pose. This statue symbolically represents the indomitable spirit and unwavering courage of all the soldiers of the Garhwal Rifles. A replica of this iconic statue was notably gifted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the Indian War Memorial at Neuve Chapelle, France, in 2015, further cementing the memorial's national and international significance. Located in the center of the Parade Ground, the memorial is surrounded by a large, well-maintained square used for drills, reflecting the disciplined and structured environment of the cantonment.
