Karaikal, Tamil Nadu, India
The Karpaka Vinayakar Temple at Pillayarpatti is a magnificent rock-cut cave temple dating back over 1,600 years. It is one of the most significant sites for Lord Ganesha worshippers in the world. The presiding deity, Karpaka Vinayakar, is a 6-foot-tall bas-relief carved out of a massive natural hi llock. Unlike other Ganesha idols, the trunk here is curved to the right (Valampuri), signifying auspiciousness and wealth. The temple was built during the early Pandyan era and has been meticulously maintained by the Nagarathar (Chettiar) community for centuries. The cave also houses a Shiva Lingam known as Tiruveesar. Devotees believe that praying to this "Karpaga" (wish-fulfilling) tree-like God brings success in new ventures and education.
