Shimla Water Catchment Wildlife Sanctuary

Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India
The Shimla Water Catchment Wildlife Sanctuary is a sprawling expanse of nearly 1,000 hectares, originally protected by the British to ensure a steady water supply for the city. It is one of the best-preserved coniferous forests in Asia, featuring a dense population of Deodar, Oak, and Pine trees. T his sanctuary is unique because it serves a dual purpose: acting as a natural filter for the city's water and providing a safe haven for diverse wildlife like the Himalayan Goral, leopards, and various pheasants. Unlike other tourist spots, the sanctuary offers a very disciplined and quiet environment, as vehicle entry is strictly prohibited inside the main forest road. Visitors can choose to walk or rent a bicycle at the entrance to explore the 7 KM flat trail that leads to the main water reservoir. The trail is incredibly scenic, with the forest canopy so thick that it creates a natural tunnel of green. It is an excellent place for those who enjoy slow travel and want to experience the silence of the mountains without the noise of traffic. The sanctuary is also an educational site, where one can learn about the delicate balance of the mountain ecosystem and the importance of water conservation. Small streams and natural springs can be found throughout the area, contributing to the serene soundtrack of the forest. It is a refreshing escape that highlights the ecological wealth of the Shimla region.
