Sondai Fort

Karjat, Maharashtra, Country: India
Sondai Fort is not a massive conventional fort but rather a historical watchtower perched at an elevation of about 480 meters (1575 feet) above sea level. It is named after the local Goddess Sondai Devi, whose small temple is located at the summit. Historically, the fort is believed to have been use d by the Marathas, possibly during the 17th century, as a strategic lookout point to monitor the vital trade routes passing through the region and to alert the main garrisons of any enemy movement. The trek to the top is considered relatively easy, making it a highly popular and accessible choice for beginners and families. The route involves climbing a series of rock-cut steps and two fixed iron ladders near the top, which adds an element of adventure. From the summit, one can witness breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the Morbe Dam, Prabalgad, Irshalgad, Rajmachi, and the entire Matheran range.
