Thiruvidaimarudur Mahalinga Swamy Temple

Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India
Known as the Madhyarjuna Kshetram, this temple is one of the greatest Shiva shrines in South India, often compared to Varanasi in sanctity. The presiding deity is Lord Mahalinga Swamy, a self-manifested (Swayambhu) Lingam. It is the center of the seven prime Shiva shrines of the region. A famous le gend involves a Chola King who was haunted by a Brahmarakshas (the spirit of a Brahmin he accidentally killed). The King entered through the main gate, prayed to the Lord, and escaped through a side gate, leaving the spirit waiting at the front. Even today, many people visit this temple to be relieved of mental distress and spirits. The temple is unique for having three Prakarams (circumambulatory paths): Aswamedha, Kodumudi, and Pranava. Walking the Aswamedha Prakaram is believed to yield the merit of performing an Aswamedha Yagna. The temple also houses a separate shrine for Goddess Mookambika, which is rare in this region. With 149 historical inscriptions, the temple is a treasure trove of Pandya, Chola, and Maratha history, showcasing a legacy of over 2,000 years of continuous worship.:
