Uppiliappan Temple

Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India
This temple, officially known as Thiruvinnagar, is dedicated to Lord Uppiliappan (a form of Vishnu) and his consort Bhumidevi. It is celebrated as the 60th Divya Desam. The legend tells of Sage Markandeya, who wished for Goddess Lakshmi to be born as his daughter and Lord Vishnu as his son-in-law. When the Lord appeared as an old man to ask for his daughter's hand, the Sage hesitated, saying she was too young to even know the right amount of salt for cooking. The Lord replied that he would accept food even without salt. Thus, the deity is called Uppiliappan (Lord without salt), and even today, no salt is added to the Prasadam offered here. It is considered as holy as Tirupati, and those who cannot visit the hills often offer their vows here. The temple is mentioned in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham by the Alvars. The sacred tank, Ahoraathra Pushkarini, is unique because it is the only temple tank where a holy dip can be taken even at night, according to local belief. The temple represents the ultimate devotion where the Lord stays for his devotee despite any shortcomings in the offering.:
