Travel Tips Of Upli Buruj

Bijapur, Karnataka, India
Upli Buruj, also known as Hyder Burj, is a massive watchtower built in 1584 by Hyder Khan, a distinguished general under the Adil Shahi rulers. Standing at a height of approximately 80 feet (24 meters), this spherical stone structure was a critical part of the city's defense system. It provided a c ommanding 360-degree view of the entire Bijapur plains, allowing sentries to spot approaching enemy armies from miles away. The tower is unique because of its external winding stone staircase that circles the structure, leading visitors to a broad platform at the top. At the summit, two legendary long-range cannons are still perched, serving as silent witnesses to the military might of the Adil Shahi dynasty. Unlike the more famous Malik-e-Maidan cannon which is made of bell metal, the guns here are exceptionally long and made of iron. The tower also contains ancient water storage tanks at its base, showing the integrated military and logistical planning of the era. Today, it remains one of the best spots to get a bird's-eye view of Bijapur's skyline, including the massive dome of the Gol Gumbaz and the arches of Bara Kaman. The climb is manageable for most, and the reward at the top is a refreshing breeze and a sense of historical awe. It is a must-visit for anyone interested in medieval fortification and military history.
