Vishvamitra Ka Tila

Kurukshetra, Haryana, India
Vishvamitra Ka Tila is a highly significant archaeological and religious site located on the outskirts of the ancient town of Pehowa. This mound (Tila) is traditionally associated with the great Vedic sage Vishvamitra, who is said to have performed intense penance here. Excavations by the Departmen t of Archaeology have revealed that this site was once home to magnificent brick temples during the Gurjara-Pratihara period (9th century AD). The site has yielded rare artifacts, including stone sculptures depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. It is unique because it provides physical evidence of the transition from ancient to medieval Indian temple architecture. The mound sits on the banks of the now-dry Saraswati River bed, adding to its historical mystique. For history buffs, it offers a glimpse into the sophisticated urban planning and religious life of 1,000 years ago. The local community holds the site in high regard, often associating it with the legend of the struggle between sages Vishvamitra and Vashistha. Visiting this site is like stepping back into a forgotten chapter of Indian history, where myths are supported by earthen remains and stone carvings.

Ancient Brick Masonry: The architecture of the remains found at the Tila consists of high-quality baked bricks. The Dimension of the main excavated plinth is approximately 25 meters by 18 meters.

Temple Style: The remains suggest a 'Panchayatana' style of temple layout, where a main shrine is surrounded by four smaller ones. The brickwork is exceptionally fine, with some bricks showing decorative moldings. The stone doorframes discovered here feature intricate carvings of Ganga and Yamuna, typical of the Pratihara style of North Indian temple architecture.
