Ariyakudi Then Tirupati

Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, India
Ariyakudi Then Tirupati, dedicated to Lord Venkatachalapathi, is one of the most significant Vishnu temples in the Chettinad region. The temple was built about 400 years ago by the Nagarattar community. Legend has it that a devotee named Sevukan Chettiar used to walk to the original Tirupati temple every year. When he became too old to travel, the Lord appeared in his dream and told him he would reside right here in Ariyakudi. The temple is considered equivalent in power and sanctity to the world-famous Tirumala Tirupati, earning it the name Then Tirupati (South Tirupati). The presiding deity is Lord Srinivasa, seen in a standing posture with his consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi. The temple is a masterpiece of Nagarattar architecture, showcasing their wealth and devotion through intricate carvings and massive stone pillars. It is a hub for religious activities, especially during the Tamil month of Purattasi, when thousands of pilgrims flock here to fulfill their vows. The atmosphere is filled with the chanting of "Govinda," making one forget they are not in the actual Tirumala. This temple stands as a testament to the deep-rooted Vaishnavite traditions in the heart of a predominantly Shaivite region. :
