Thirumayam Fort

Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, India
Thirumayam Fort is a majestic 17th-century structure built by Vijaya Raghunatha Sethupathi, the Raja of Ramnad. Spanning over 40 acres, this fort is a brilliant example of medieval military engineering. It is famously known as Oomayan Kottai (Fort of the Dumb) because it served as a hideout for the brother of the legendary freedom fighter Veerapandiya Kattabomman. The fort is built around a massive rock hill, with concentric walls designed to trap invaders. At the foot of the fort, there are two world-famous rock-cut temples: one dedicated to Lord Shiva and the other to Lord Vishnu. These temples are older than the fort itself and contain some of the finest rock-cut sculptures in South India. Climbing to the top of the fort rewarded visitors with a breathtaking 360-degree view of the surrounding plains and the town of Thirumayam. The fort has seen many battles, from local chieftains to British forces, and its walls still bear the scars of history. Managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), it is a treasure trove for anyone interested in cannons, secret tunnels, and ancient defensive strategies. :
