Chettinad Palace

Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, India
The Chettinad Palace, also known as the Kanadukathan Palace, was built by Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar in 1912. This is perhaps the most grand and well-maintained mansion in the entire region, reflecting the peak of Chettinad architectural glory. The palace took seven years to complete and is a mas terpiece of craftsmanship, using materials imported from around the world. It features a massive entrance hall, multiple courtyards, and a dining hall that can accommodate hundreds of people. The palace is still partially occupied by the royal family, so access to the interiors is sometimes restricted, but the exterior and the public areas are breathtaking. It serves as a prime example of how the Chettiars blended their traditional roots with the luxury they encountered during their overseas business trips. The intricate woodwork, the massive granite pillars, and the polished lime-plastered walls (which stay cool in summer) are highlights of this magnificent structure.
