Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary

Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, India
Vettangudi Bird Sanctuary is a hidden natural jewel located near Thiruppathur in the Sivaganga district. Covering about 40 hectares, it comprises three irrigation tanks: Vettangudi, Periyakollukudi, and Chinnakollukudi. This sanctuary is the natural habitat for thousands of winter migratory birds t hat fly in from as far as Northern Asia and Europe. It was officially declared a sanctuary in 1977 and has since been a safe breeding ground for species like the Grey Heron, Spoonbill, and Painted Stork. The ecosystem here is unique, as the birds nest on the Acacia nilotica trees that grow within the water tanks. For nature lovers and birdwatchers, this place offers a peaceful escape from the dusty roads of the city. The sight of thousands of birds returning to their nests at sunset is a mesmerizing experience. The sanctuary is also an educational hub for students to learn about avian diversity and wetland conservation. It is a quiet, unassuming place that comes alive with the calls of thousands of birds during the peak season. :
