FAQs On Chabimura Rock Carvings

Chabimura, Tripura, India
Chabimura Rock Carvings is an extraordinary archaeological site located in the Gomati district of Tripura, India. These ancient rock carvings are etched into the steep, vertical walls of the Devatamura hill range, which rises majestically alongside the Gomati River. The site is often referred to as the "Amazon of Tripura" due to the dense, lush green forests and the serene river journey required to witness the art. The carvings primarily date back to the 15th and 16th centuries, during the reign of the Tripuri kings. The most iconic image is that of Goddess Durga in her Mahishasuramardini form, standing nearly 20 feet tall. This colossal relief is a masterpiece of indigenous craftsmanship, showing the goddess with ten arms, each holding a weapon to slay the buffalo demon. Other carvings include depictions of Lord Shiva, Vishnu, Kartikeya, and Ganesha. The scale of these carvings, situated on a 90-degree cliff face, is truly awe-inspiring. Visitors must take a motorboat or traditional boat to see the full sequence of panels, as they are otherwise inaccessible. The surrounding jungle is home to diverse flora and fauna, adding a layer of natural mystery to the historical significance. Exploring this site feels like a journey back in time, where religion and nature converge in a quiet, powerful display. Despite the passage of centuries and exposure to tropical rains, the carvings retain a remarkable level of detail. The local Jamatia community holds the site in high spiritual regard, often associating it with local legends and deities. It is not just a tourist spot but a living cultural heritage that represents the artistic peak of medieval Tripura. The tranquility of the river, broken only by the sound of the boat and birds, makes it a spiritual retreat for many.
