Gurudwara Shahidganj

Nawanshahr, Punjab, India
Battle Against Subedar Shamas Khan: Gurudwara Shahidganj is a historical site that commemorates a fierce battle fought in 1767. The conflict involved Sikh warriors Godria Singh, Lodria Singh, and Roop Kaur against the Mughal Subedar Shamas Khan. The Subedar had reportedly abducted a girl from the vi llage of Behram, and the Sikh forces intervened to rescue her and uphold justice. Many Sikh soldiers attained martyrdom during this rescue mission and were cremated on this very spot. The Gurudwara stands as a symbol of the Sikh commitment to protecting the honor of the oppressed. It is a place where the stories of Roop Kaur, a brave female warrior, are still told with great pride. The history of this place is a testament to the fact that the Khalsa never hesitated to fight against social evils and tyranny. Visitors often feel a sense of profound respect when they walk through the gates, knowing the heavy price paid for freedom and dignity here. The local community maintains the site with great care, ensuring that the legacy of the 1767 martyrs is never forgotten. It is a spiritual hub that also serves as a historical museum for the younger generation to learn about their ancestors' bravery.

Traveler Guidelines: It is important to dress conservatively; ensure your shoulders and legs are covered. Carry a reusable water bottle to reduce plastic waste. Mobile signals are strong, but the Gurudwara is a silent zone, so keep phones on silent. For food, the Langar is the best option, but there are small dhabas on the main highway. ATMs are available in the nearby town of Behram. Always keep some small change for the auto-drivers. If you are traveling from far, staying in Nawanshahr or Phagwara is recommended as the village has no hotels. Connectivity is decent for mobile data, but do not expect public Wi-Fi.
