Harihareshwara Temple

Davangere, Karnataka, India
Mythological Legend: This temple is home to Harihara, a unique fusion of Lord Vishnu (Hari) and Lord Shiva (Hara). Legend says the demon Guhasura had a boon that neither Vishnu nor Shiva could kill him alone. Therefore, the two deities merged into one form to slay him. Hoysala Craftsmanship: Built i n 1223 CE by Polalva, a commander of the Hoysala King Vira Narasimha II, this temple is a masterpiece of soapstone architecture. The deity's image is about 4 feet tall, with the right side representing Shiva and the left side representing Vishnu. Historical Inscriptions: The temple complex houses several stone inscriptions in Old Kannada, providing a chronological history of the Hoysala and Vijayanagara empires. Spiritual Atmosphere: Known as the "Dakshina Kashi," it is a major pilgrimage center in Karnataka. The serene flow of the Tungabhadra river right behind the temple adds to its holiness.
