Santhebennur Pushkarani

Davangere, Karnataka, India
Santhebennur Pushkarani, also known as the Santhebennur Honda, is one of the most stunning and largest stepwells in Karnataka. Built in the 16th century by Hiriya Hanumappa Nayaka, a Palegar of the Vijayanagara Empire, the pond is a masterpiece of hydraulic engineering and aesthetic design. The mos t striking feature of the pond is the Vasantha Mantapa, a two-story pavilion located exactly in the center. This pavilion is a unique blend of Hindu and Islamic styles, featuring arched entrances, vaults, and a ribbed dome. The pond is approximately 250 feet long and 240 feet wide, with granite steps leading down to the water on all four sides. Originally, there were eight towers (Mantapas) built at the cardinal directions around the pond, though only six remain today. The complex also includes a Rama Temple and a Musafirkhana, representing the layered history of the region. Legend says the Vasantha Mantapa was built to celebrate the local ruler's victory over the Bijapur Sultans. During the rainy season, the water level rises to surround the central pavilion, making it appear as if it is floating. The site is a popular picnic spot and a major attraction for those interested in the medieval history of the Nayakas of Santhebennur.
