Haripur Garh

Mayurbhanj, Odisha, India
Haripur Garh, also known as Haripurgada, is a significant historical site that once served as the second capital of the Mayurbhanj State. Founded in 1400 CE by Maharaja Harihar Bhanja, the city was named Hariharpur in his honor. The site is strategically located on the banks of the Budhabalanga Riv er, which provided a natural defense against invaders. Today, the palace lies in ruins, but the remnants tell a powerful story of the prosperity and architectural brilliance of the Bhanja Dynasty. The most striking feature of the complex is the Rasika Raya Temple, a rare brick-built temple that has survived the ravages of time and invasions. The entire site covers about 25 acres and includes the foundations of the royal palace, old gateways, and the ruins of the Jagannath and Radhamohan temples. Walking through the ruins, one can see the layout of the ancient fort, including the queen’s chambers and the administrative blocks. The site is historically significant as it witnessed the transition of the Bhanja rulers from Khiching to this more secure location during the Tughlaq invasions. It is also mentioned in Vaishnava literature, as the great saint Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is said to have visited this place on his way to Puri. For history buffs, it is a living museum that showcases the integration of military strategy and religious devotion. The intricate terracotta carvings on the temple walls are among the finest in Eastern India, depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.

Bengal Terracotta and Rekha Deul Style: The architecture of Haripur Garh is a unique blend of Odian and Bengali styles. The Rasika Raya Temple is the masterpiece here, constructed entirely of high-quality burnt bricks. It measures approximately 45 feet in height. The temple features a curvilinear tower (Rekha Deul) and is decorated with exquisite terracotta panels. The palace ruins show a foundation of laterite stone and brick, with dimensions suggesting a massive two-story structure. The fort walls were once 15 feet thick, built with a mix of mud, stone, and lime mortar.
