Things To Do
-
Bathing in Forest Water: Taking a dip in the cool, clear water of the Uski falls is a must-do. It’s a refreshing break from the long safari drive.
Wildlife Spotting: Since you are in the core of a Tiger Reserve, keep your eyes peeled. It’s common to see langurs in the trees and hoof marks of deer near the water’s edge.
Nature Photography: The close proximity allows for great detail shots of the water hitting the rocks. The mossy green stones and the dark forest background provide a professional-level palette for photos.
Guided Jungle Walk: With a forest guide, you can take a short walk around the stream to identify different bird calls and learn about the "Elephant Reserve" ecosystem.

Birdwatching: The canopy above the falls is a hotspot for the Malabar Pied Hornbill and various wood-peckers.
Bring your binoculars! Picnicking (Restricted): While cooking is not allowed, you can enjoy a packed lunch in the designated forest clearing while listening to the roar of the falls.
Meditating: The "white noise" of the waterfall and the isolation from the world make it a perfect spot for 15 minutes of deep forest meditation.
Storytelling: Listen to your forest guide's stories about the tigress Khairi and the history of the Bhanja kings who once hunted in these very woods.

Why Famous:
Up-Close Experience: It is the only waterfall in Similipal where you are permitted to go near the water and even take a bath. This "interactivity" makes it a favorite for tourists who find the other falls too distant.

The Khairi Connection: Famous as the area where the legendary tigress Khairi lived her early days, adding a layer of wildlife history and emotion to the natural beauty of the spot. -
Architecture:
Geological Structure: The waterfall descends from a height of about 40-50 feet. The rock face is composed of ancient metamorphic rock, typical of the Similipal plateau. Dimensions: The pool at the bottom is relatively shallow near the edges, allowing for safe entry. The stream then continues as a rocky brook, winding through the giant Sal trees. There are no man-made structures here other than a few wooden signs and a small forest clearing, ensuring the site remains 100% natural and wild. -

By Train: Balasore Railway Station (approx. 95 KM from Jashipur) is the best rail link. From Balasore, hire a taxi to Jashipur. Some local trains also reach Bangriposi, which is closer but has fewer transport options.
By Road: Jashipur is located on NH-49. It is well-connected by bus from Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, and Ranchi. From Jashipur, you MUST hire a 4WD forest vehicle (like a Bolero or Gypsy) to enter the reserve.
By Local Transport: Within the Tiger Reserve, only authorized forest safari vehicles are allowed. Private cars must have a high ground clearance (>180mm) to get a permit, but hiring a local safari jeep is highly recommended due to the rough terrain. -

Summer (March to June): The park is open, but it can be hot and dusty. However, the waterfall is at its most inviting as a "cooling station. " This is also the best time for tiger sightings at salt licks.
Monsoon (July to October): The Tiger Reserve is CLOSED to tourists during the monsoon due to washed-out roads and animal breeding seasons. Do not plan a trip during this time. -

Packing: Wear dull-colored clothing (khaki, olive, brown) to blend in. Carry a towel and a change of clothes if you plan to bathe. Bring all your snacks and plenty of water, as there are no shops inside the core area.
Accommodation and Cash: Stay at the OFDC Nature Camps in Gurguria or Kumari for an authentic experience. Carry significant cash for the vehicle hire and entry fees, as the last ATMs are in Jashipur town.
Connectivity: There is NO mobile network inside the core area of Similipal. It is a "digital detox" zone. Inform your family that you will be unreachable for the duration of your safari. Enjoy the rare silence!
