History Of Kailash Kund Lake

Bhaderwah, Jammu and Kashmir, India
A Lake Shrouded in Spiritual Mysticism: Kailash Kund Lake, locally often referred to as Kaplas Kund, is a magnificent, pure ice-cold freshwater lake situated at a daunting altitude of approximately 14,241 feet (4,339 meters) above sea level, nestled within the Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas in th e Doda district. The journey to this holy site is not for the faint-hearted, as it involves a challenging multi-day trek, usually starting from the Vasuki Nag Temple in Gatha Village or the roadhead near Chattergala Pass, about 36 KMs from Bhaderwah. The lake holds profound religious significance, as it is believed to be the ancient abode of Vasuki Nag, the serpent deity and the presiding deity of the Bhaderwah region, as described in the Vasuki Purana scriptures. It is a slate-grey, mile-wide body of water encircled by stark, rugged mountain peaks and glaciers, including the imposing Mount Kablas, making for a dramatic and untamed natural setting. The lake is the central point of the highly revered annual Kailash Kund Yatra, a three-day sacred pilgrimage held between August and September, which attracts thousands of devotees who undertake the arduous trek to take a cleansing, holy dip in its frigid waters, believing it absolves sins and brings the blessings of the deity. The trek route itself is a spiritual journey, passing through picturesque meadows like Seoj Dhar, with every rest point and temple along the way steeped in local folklore and history, offering a blend of intense spiritual reverence and a challenging high-altitude adventure in a raw and pristine Himalayan environment, far removed from regular tourist paths, thus ensuring its continued sanctity.
