History Of Tilwara Ghat

Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India
Tilwara Ghat is one of the most historically and religiously significant ghats on the bank of the holy River Narmada in Jabalpur. Its immense importance stems from two major historical events. First, it is the sacred spot where the ashes of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, were immersed in the Narmada River after his assassination in 1948. A prominent Gandhi Smarak (memorial) stands here to commemorate this event. Second, the ground near the ghat, known as Tilak Bhoomi, is where national leader Lokmanya Tilak addressed a massive public rally in 1939, cementing its role in the freedom struggle. The ghat's religious history is even older, dating back over 1100 years to the Kalchuri dynasty. It is named Tilwara because Queen Nohla Devi began the tradition of offering sesame seeds (Til) into the Narmada on Makar Sankranti (January), a tradition that continues to this day. The ghat is an active center for religious rituals like Narmada Aarti, holy dips (Narmada Snan), and other ceremonies, drawing devotees seeking spiritual purification and connection to the holy river.
