Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India
The Delhi Gate in Arcot is one of the most significant historical landmarks in the Vellore region, representing the glorious past of the Nawabs of the Carnatic. Built as part of the original Arcot Fort, this gate is the only major structure that survived the various sieges and the passage of time. Arcot was once the capital of the Carnatic region and played a pivotal role in the 18th-century power struggle between the British, the French, and the local rulers. The Delhi Gate specifically gained fame during the Siege of Arcot in 1751, where Robert Clive of the British East India Company achieved a legendary victory against a much larger force. The structure is built with a combination of brick and lime mortar, showcasing a blend of Indo-Saracenic and European military architecture. Above the gate, there is a small room that is said to have been used by Robert Clive as his office. The gate served as the northern entrance to the fort, pointing towards Delhi, symbolizing the connection to the Mughal Empire. Today, the area around the gate is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. While much of the fort's walls have disappeared, the Delhi Gate stands tall as a reminder of the strategic importance of Arcot. Visitors can explore the nearby tombs of the Nawabs and the ancient mosques that dot the town. The atmosphere in Arcot is steeped in history, with narrow lanes and old structures that tell tales of bravery and betrayal. It is an essential visit for history buffs traveling to Vellore, offering a different perspective on the colonial history of India. The local cuisine, especially the Arcot Makkan Peda, adds a sweet touch to the historical exploration.
