It is the legendary 'Karmasthali' or workplace of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the iconic tribal freedom fighter. In 1899, this hill was the center of the Ulgulan (Great Tumult) rebellion against Br itish colonial rule. It was here that thousands of Munda tribesmen gathered to listen to Birsa Munda's call for freedom. Tragically, on January 9, 1900, British forces opened fire on the unarmed gathered tribals, leading to a massacre that is often compared to the Jallianwala Bagh tragedy. Today, a tall memorial pillar stands at the top of the hill to honor the martyrs. The hill offers a panoramic view of the surrounding valleys and dense forests of Khunti. Climbing the hill is a spiritual journey for many who revere Birsa Munda as a folk deity. The site serves as a powerful reminder of the tribal struggle for land and identity. Every year on January 9, a massive fair is held here, drawing people from all over the state to pay their respects. The path to the top is a bit steep but well-marked with steps. Small shrines and statues of the tribal leader can be found along the way. The silence of the hill today stands in stark contrast to the historical cries for independence.
