How To Reach Bakkhali Beach
How to Reach
By Air: The nearest major airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) in Kolkata (approximately 130 KMS to Namkhana and then an additional 25 KMS to Bakkhali). After landing at CCU, tourists should hire a pre-booked taxi or use ride-sharing services to travel directly to Namkhana. The road journey to Namkhana takes around 3 to 4 hours, depending on Kolkata city traffic. Alternatively, one can take a train from Howrah or Sealdah railway stations to Namkhana and then proceed to the final leg of the journey by local transport. The total travel time from the airport to Bakkhali is typically 5 to 6 hours, factoring in the required ferry crossing and the final bus ride.
By Train: The most common and cost-effective method involves taking a local train from Sealdah South Section in Kolkata to Namkhana Railway Station (NMKA). The train journey takes approximately 3 hours. Trains are frequent, but often crowded, especially on weekends. From Namkhana Railway Station, the destination is the Hatania-Doania river ferry ghat, which is about 1 KM away and accessible by Toto or cycle-rickshaw. The final leg of the journey is then taken after crossing the river. This rail route is reliable, providing a scenic, though bustling, experience of Bengali rural life and transportation.
By Road: The total distance by road from Kolkata to Bakkhali is approximately 125 KMS. The route primarily follows the National Highway 12 (NH12) and local state highways through Diamond Harbour and Kakdwip. The journey is smooth up until Namkhana. The critical part of the road journey is the Hatania-Doania river crossing. If driving your own vehicle, you must use the specialized, vehicular ferry at Namkhana to cross the river. This ferry crossing itself can take 20 to 40 minutes, and waiting times can be long (up to 2 hours or more) during peak season or holidays. Once across the river, the final 25 KMS drive to Bakkhali is direct and generally takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour. By Local Transport (Post-Ferry) After crossing the Hatania-Doania river (either by foot ferry if traveling by train/bus, or by vehicular ferry if driving), the remaining 25 KMS to Bakkhali is covered primarily by local bus or reserved taxi/auto/Toto. Public buses are inexpensive and frequent, running from the ferry ghat directly to the Bakkhali Bus Stand. Reserved taxis or larger Totos offer a quicker, more comfortable, but more expensive option. These local transport services are readily available immediately upon exiting the ferry area. Ensure you clarify the fare before starting the journey, especially if reserving a private vehicle. The entire last leg of the journey is picturesque, passing through rural landscapes and dense patches of Casuarina forest.
