How To Reach Bekal Fort
Bekal Fort is the most iconic landmark of Bekal and stands as the largest and most well-preserved fort in the entire state of Kerala. Spanning over 40 acres on a headland that juts into the Arabian Sea, this historical marvel dates back to around 1650 AD, built predominantly by Shivappa Nayaka of th e Keladi dynasty, though its history involves earlier rulers like the Kolathiri Rajas. The fort's strategic location and unique design suggest it was primarily constructed for defense purposes, lacking the palaces or administrative buildings typical of many other forts. Its sheer size and impressive laterite masonry evoke a sense of a glorious bygone era. Visitors are greeted by a zigzag entrance, a well-preserved water tank with steps, and the prominent Observation Tower, which offers breathtaking, panoramic views of the coastline. The sea-facing bastions and the strategically placed defense holes on the outer walls testify to the architectural and military ingenuity of its builders. How to Reach
By Air:
The nearest major airport to Bekal is the Mangalore International Airport (IXE), located in the neighboring state of Karnataka, at a distance of approximately 70-75 KMS. The airport is well-connected with domestic flights to major Indian cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai, as well as international destinations in the Middle East. From Mangalore Airport, visitors can hire pre-paid taxis or private cabs directly to Bekal, which takes around 2 to 3 hours depending on traffic.
Another viable option is the Kannur International Airport (CNN), which is roughly 100-110 KMS away. This airport is also well-connected and a slightly more comfortable drive through Kerala's landscape. Similarly, taxis or private transportation can be arranged from Kannur to reach Bekal.
By Train: The closest major railway station is Kasaragod Railway Station (KGQ), which is about 14-16 KMS from Bekal Fort. Kasaragod is a significant station on the Mangalore-Shoranur section of the Southern Railway and is well-connected by express and superfast trains to major Indian cities like Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Mangalore, Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai. From Kasaragod station, you can easily hire an auto-rickshaw (a convenient form of local transport) or a taxi to reach the fort in about 30-45 minutes. An alternative station is Kanhangad Railway Station (KZE), which is approximately 12 KMS from the fort. Both stations offer similar connectivity and ease of access to Bekal.
