How To Reach Dal Lake

Sub Place Details: Dal Lake in Kangra is a serene, mid-altitude lake situated at an elevation of 1,775 meters above sea level. Not to be confused with its namesake in Kashmir, this lake is a sacred site for the local Gaddi tribes and is surrounded by dense forests of Deodar trees. It is a small but picturesque body of water that reflects the deep green of the forest and the blue of the sky. Legend has it that the sage Durvasa meditated here and installed a Shivaling on its banks. The lake is considered holy, and a dip in its waters is believed to wash away sins. Every year in September, a large fair is held here to celebrate Lord Shiva, attracting thousands of devotees. The area around the lake is perfect for long walks and nature photography. The stillness of the water and the whispering of the pine trees create a meditative atmosphere. Over the years, the lake has become a popular spot for picnics and short excursions from McLeod Ganj. Although the lake is smaller than others in the region, its spiritual importance and natural setting make it a must-visit. Efforts are constantly being made by the local government to desilt and preserve this ecological gem. It serves as a base for many short treks leading into the higher reaches of the Dhauladhars.

How to Reach

By Air: Gaggal Airport is 18 KMs away; it takes about an hour by taxi.

By Train: Pathankot is the nearest major railhead, followed by a bus or taxi ride to Dharamshala.

By Road: It is located on the road between McLeod Ganj and Naddi, easily reachable by bus.

By Local Transport: You can take a 2 KM walk from McLeod Ganj bazaar or hire a local cab.
