How To Reach Dharagiri Falls

Ghatsila, Jharkhand, India
Natural Wonder of Ghatsila: Dharagiri Falls is a captivating natural waterfall nestled deep inside the forests of the Dalma Hill Range, near Ghatsila. It is a relatively untouched and serene spot, making it a perfect escape for nature lovers and adventurers seeking tranquility away from urban bustle . The water cascades down from a height, creating a beautiful spectacle and a refreshing, cool mist in the surrounding area. The environment is characterized by lush, dense tropical greenery and the soothing sound of the gushing water. The falls are often considered one of the primary natural attractions in the East Singhbhum region. Visitors typically combine a trip to the falls with a visit to the nearby Burudih Lake. It is crucial to note that the falls are seasonal; while they are majestic during the monsoon and post-monsoon months, the water flow significantly reduces or even dries up during the peak of the winter and summer seasons. The location is associated with local tribal villages and their folklore, adding a layer of cultural significance. The journey to the falls involves a short, invigorating trek through rugged terrain and dense forest, which is an adventure in itself, allowing visitors to connect deeply with nature's raw beauty. The falls' height is generally cited as between 20 to 25 feet, offering a picturesque backdrop for photography and relaxation. The area has seen a rising influx of eco-tourists and picnickers, drawn by its peaceful and scenic setting, though infrastructure remains basic, preserving its wild charm.

How to Reach

By Air (Nearest Airport): The nearest major airport is Birsa Munda Airport (IXR) in Ranchi, approximately 160-180 KMS away. A closer, though smaller, airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) in Kolkata, around 250 KMS. From Ranchi or Kolkata, travelers need to hire a private taxi or take a train to Ghatsila. The journey from Ranchi by road takes about 4-5 hours, and from Kolkata about 5-6 hours.

By Train (Nearest Railway Station): The most convenient option is to take a train to Ghatsila Railway Station (GTS), which is well-connected to major cities like Howrah (Kolkata) and Tatanagar (Jamshedpur). Trains like the Howrah-Barbil Jan Shatabdi Express or various others on the Kharagpur–Tatanagar section of the South Eastern Railway stop here. Ghatsila Railway Station is the nearest major railhead, approximately 10 to 13 KMS from the falls. From the station, hire an auto-rickshaw or a car.

By Road (Self-Drive or Bus): Ghatsila is well-connected by National Highway 49 (NH 49), which connects the town to Jamshedpur (approx. 45 KMS) and Kharagpur (West Bengal). From Ghatsila, one must take the road towards Burudih Lake and then on to Basadera village. A private car or hired taxi is the most comfortable option. Note that the final stretch of 1-2 KMS from the village to the fall’s parking area can be rough, and the last 1 KM is a mandatory trek.

By Local Transport (Auto-rickshaw/Car Hire): From Ghatsila Railway Station or the town center, hire a local auto-rickshaw or a private car. Negotiate the fare beforehand. The auto-rickshaw may charge around Rs. 500 for a return trip including waiting time for the falls and Burudih Lake. It is highly recommended to hire a local guide from Basadera village for the final trek to ensure safety and navigation through the forest path.
