How To Reach Dwarahat Temples

Ranikhet, Uttarakhand, India
The Heritage of Dwarahat: Dwarahat, which literally translates to "Way to Heaven," is a small, historic town nestled in the Kumaon hills. It is famous for a complex of 55 ancient temples that date back to the 11th century. These temples were constructed by the Katyuri kings, who were great patrons o f art and architecture. The town serves as a living museum of Uttarakhand's glorious past. Temple Groups: The temples at Dwarahat are divided into eight distinct groups, including the Mrityunjaya group, Badrinath group, Bandeo group, and Gujar Deo group. Each group has its own unique charm and significance. The most prominent among them is the Maa Dunagiri Temple, located on a nearby hill, which requires a climb of about 500 steps. Cultural Hub: Beyond the stones, Dwarahat is a vibrant center of Kumaoni culture. The town is also the headquarters of the Yogoda Satsanga Sakha Ashram, founded by Paramahansa Yogananda. This adds a layer of modern spirituality to the ancient archaeological site. The town is surrounded by lush greenery and offers panoramic views of the Himalayas. Historical Legacy: The architecture of these temples reflects the North Indian Nagara style and the Gurjari School of Art. Walking through the narrow lanes of Dwarahat feels like stepping back in time. The intricate carvings and the sheer number of shrines make it a paradise for history buffs, photographers, and spiritual seekers visiting the Ranikhet region.
