How To Reach Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary

Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary is a sprawling protected area located in the central part of Mizoram, covering approximately 35 square kilometers. It is renowned for its diverse topography, which includes steep cliffs, deep valleys, and subtropical evergreen forests. The sanctuary is a haven for a wi de variety of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to the Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot. Historically, the area was the site of a tragic massacre at Khawnglung village in the mid-19th Century, and the ruins of the old settlement can still be found within the sanctuary's boundaries. Today, it serves as a critical habitat for animals such as the Hoolock Gibbon, Sambar, Barking Deer, and the elusive Leopard. For birdwatchers, the sanctuary is a paradise, home to the Great Indian Hornbill and various species of pheasants. The terrain is challenging but rewarding, offering breathtaking vistas of the surrounding mountain ranges. The sanctuary is managed by the Department of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, and efforts are ongoing to preserve its unique ecosystem from the threats of shifting cultivation and illegal hunting. A visit to Khawnglung is not just a nature trip but an adventurous journey into one of the most rugged and beautiful parts of the state. How to Reach

By Air: Reach Aizawl and then travel 140 KM by road to the sanctuary entrance.

By Train: The nearest railhead is Sairang; proceed by road via Aizawl or Thenzawl.

By Road: It is accessible from both Lunglei and Serchhip towns; the road involves winding mountain passes.

By Local Transport: Private taxis are the best option; public buses stop at nearby villages like Pangzawl, from where local transport is needed. :
