How To Reach Lafagarh Fort

Korba, Chhattisgarh, India:
Historical and Military Importance: Lafagarh, also famously known as Chaiturgarh, is one of the most historically significant hill forts in Chhattisgarh, located in the Satpura Range at an elevation of over 3,060 feet (934 meters). It is designated an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) protected m onument. The fort was originally constructed or significantly developed in the 10th Century CE by Raja Prithvideva I of the powerful Kalachuri dynasty, and is counted among the 36 historical forts of Chhattisgarh. It served as a strategic military and administrative center, changing hands over centuries, including a period of rule under the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1571. Natural Fortification: The fort's unique status stems from its geography. It is described as a "natural fort" because it relies more on its formidable cliffs—sheer drops of 200-300 feet on all sides—than on man-made defenses. Constructive fortification was only necessary in a few narrow passes. The plateau spans approximately 5 square kilometers. Religious Sites: The fort area is not purely military; it is a long-standing pilgrimage destination and is home to several important temples, including the highly revered Mahishasur Mardini Temple, dedicated to a form of Goddess Durga. The plateau also has man-made ponds and natural caves, indicating continuous occupation and religious use over a long period.:
