How To Reach Nageswaran Temple

Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India
The Nageswaran Temple, also known as Nageswaraswamy Temple, is one of the oldest and most architecturally significant Shiva temples in Kumbakonam. Dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Nageswaran, it is a masterclass in early Chola artistry. Legend states that the serpent king Adisesha worshipped Shiva here, which gives the temple its name. The temple is unique because it is designed as a Surya Kottam (Sun Temple), and its orientation is a marvel of ancient astronomy. For three days during the Tamil month of Chithirai, the sun's rays fall directly on the Shiva Linga in the sanctum, bypassing all the outer pillars and walls. The temple is also associated with the planet Rahu, making it a vital stop for those seeking relief from planetary afflictions. The complex is relatively compact compared to others, but every square inch of stone is covered with detailed carvings. It provides a quiet, meditative atmosphere away from the busier major shrines. The presiding deity is worshipped along with his consort, Pritiviyambika. The temple's inclusion in the Tevaram hymns by the Nayanars highlights its ancient spiritual importance. It serves as a living museum of the Chola dynasty's golden era, showcasing how science, astronomy, and religion were intertwined in ancient India.
