How To Reach Old Digha Beach

Digha, West Bengal, India
Old Digha Beach is the original beach destination that put Digha on the tourist map. It offers a nostalgic and more traditional seaside experience compared to its newer counterpart, New Digha Beach. While erosion over the years has led to the coastline being largely protected by large stones and con crete steps, this very feature has created an excellent promenade for walking, sitting, and enjoying the magnificent views of the Bay of Bengal. The beach is especially famous for its spectacular sunrise and sunset views, which paint the sky with vibrant colours. Though the sand stretch for bathing is comparatively smaller and the waves are rougher near the retaining walls, the concrete seating areas provide a perfect spot to relax and feel the sea breeze. The area is bustling with small shops, street food stalls, and local markets, particularly in the evening, offering everything from shell-made souvenirs to delicious local cuisine. It's a place where you can soak in the lively local culture alongside the natural beauty of the sea. The old-world charm, coupled with the energetic atmosphere, makes Old Digha Beach a favourite among tourists seeking a quintessential Digha experience.

How to Reach

By Air: The nearest major airport is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) in Kolkata, approximately 180-190 KMs away. From the airport, you can hire a pre-paid taxi or travel to the Howrah or Esplanade bus terminals in Kolkata to catch a train or bus to Digha. The entire journey from the airport to Old Digha Beach takes about 5-7 hours, depending on traffic and mode of transport.

By Train: The town has its own railway station, Digha Flag Station (DGHA). Regular train services, such as the Kandari Express and Tamralipta Express, connect Digha with Howrah (Kolkata). The station is only about 2 KMs from Old Digha Beach. From the railway station, you can easily hire a cycle rickshaw, auto-rickshaw, or a local taxi to reach the beach in a few minutes.

By Road: Digha is well-connected by road, especially from Kolkata (about 4-5 hours drive). The drive is scenic, passing through National Highway 16 and then State Highways. Both private cars and numerous state-run and private bus services operate daily from major cities like Kolkata (Esplanade/Dharmatala) and other towns in West Bengal and Odisha to the Digha Bus Stand, which is very close to Old Digha Beach.

By Local Transport: Once in Digha, reaching Old Digha Beach is simple. Cycle rickshaws and auto-rickshaws are the most common and convenient local transport. They operate across the town and charge a nominal, negotiated fare. Many hotels are within walking distance of the beach. For visitors staying in New Digha, local buses or shared auto-rickshaws are also available for the short journey.
