How To Reach Ombattu Gudda Hill

Ombattu Gudda is one of the highest and most challenging peaks in the Western Ghats of Karnataka. The name literally translates to "Nine Hills" in the local Kannada language, referring to the nine distinct humps or ridges that form the summit of this massive mountain. It is situated within the Kabb inahole Reserve Forest, a region known for its extremely dense vegetation and rich wildlife. This destination is not for the faint-hearted, as the trek to the top is considered one of the most difficult in the state. The trail takes you through a variety of terrains, including thick tropical rainforests, vast grasslands, and rocky riverbeds. One of the highlights of the trek is crossing the Kabbinale River, where trekkers often have to wade through waist-deep water. The forest is home to wild elephants, leopards, and a vast array of bird species, making every step an adventure. Reaching the summit of Ombattu Gudda provides a sense of accomplishment that few other treks can offer. From the top, you get a bird's-eye view of the entire Sakleshpur and Chikmagalur border, with clouds often floating below the level of the peak. The hill is part of the Shirshadi range and plays a crucial role in the local ecology as a major watershed. Because of its remote location and the difficulty of the climb, it remains largely untouched by mass tourism, preserving its pristine and rugged beauty. It is a place where you can truly experience the raw power of the Western Ghats and test your physical and mental limits in the heart of the wilderness.

How to Reach

By Air: Fly to Mangalore (IXE); it is the closest airport, about 100 KMS from the Gundya check post where the trek begins.

By Train: Take a train to Sakleshpur or Subramanya Road Station; both are convenient points to hire a jeep to reach the base camp.

By Road: Drive on the Bangalore-Mangalore Highway to Gundya; there are several spots to park your vehicle near the forest check post.

By Local Transport: KSRTC buses running between Bangalore and Mangalore stop at Gundya, providing easy access for solo backpackers.
