How To Reach Shivaji's Ladder

Matheran, Maharashtra, India
Shivaji's Ladder is a famed, historically significant, and moderately difficult trekking route in Matheran. It is a pathway, often appearing like natural, steep, rough-cut steps or a "ladder" carved into the side of the hill, connecting the One Tree Hill Point viewpoint on the plateau down to the ba se of the hill near Ambewadi or the Chowk valley. The path is named in honor of the great Maratha ruler, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, as local historians and legends believe he frequently used this specific pathway for his hunting excursions and surprise visits to the Matheran region. This route was famously rediscovered by Hugh Poyntz Malet, the District Collector of Thane, in 1850 AD, who is credited with the original discovery and development of Matheran as a hill station. The trail winds through dense forest, offering a shaded and thrilling descent with captivating views of the valley. It represents a living piece of history and is a major draw for adventure tourists who prefer a traditional, challenging trek over the easy, paved paths of the main hill station. The total trek length is about 6 KMs from Ambewadi to the top.
