Jaigad Lighthouse

Ganpatipule, Maharashtra, India
Maritime and Engineering Overview: The Jaigad Lighthouse is a stunning engineering marvel situated on a cliff edge near the Jaigad Fort. Built in 1832 by the British, it continues to serve as a vital navigational aid for ships traveling along the busy Ratnagiri-Dabhol sea route. The lighthouse is co nstructed using high-quality cast iron and steel, which was remarkably shipped all the way from England during the colonial era. Standing tall at a height of 70 feet, the tower is painted in traditional white and red bands, making it a prominent landmark on the Konkan coastline. Visitors can climb the spiral staircase to reach the top gallery, which offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and the surrounding verdant hills. The lighthouse is equipped with a powerful LED lamp (upgraded from older oil lamps) that can be seen from several nautical miles away. The premises around the lighthouse are beautifully maintained with a small garden and a residential quarter for the lighthouse keeper. The serene atmosphere, combined with the rhythmic sound of the ocean below, makes it a peaceful retreat. It provides a unique perspective on the maritime heritage of India and the evolution of naval technology over the last two centuries.
