Khoupum Dam

Tamenglong, Manipur, India
Khoupum Dam is one of the most prominent landmarks in the Khoupum Valley of Tamenglong, Manipur. Constructed in the late 1970s, it holds the distinction of being the first earth-fill dam in Northeast India. The dam was primarily built for irrigation purposes to support the vast agricultural expanse s of the valley, which is often called the "Rice Bowl of Tamenglong." The structure creates a massive reservoir that mirrors the surrounding lush green mountains, creating a breathtaking visual spectacle. The dam has significantly altered the landscape and economy of the region, providing a stable water source for paddy cultivation throughout the year. Beyond its utility, the area around Khoupum Dam has evolved into a popular recreational spot for locals and tourists alike. The serene waters of the reservoir are ideal for quiet contemplation and enjoying the natural beauty of the Manipur highlands. The valley itself is a wide, flat expanse of greenery bordered by steep hills, and the dam serves as the focal point of this unique geography. Visitors can walk along the embankment to get a panoramic view of the entire valley and the Barak River tributaries. The construction of the dam represents a significant era of developmental history in the district. Despite the environmental changes it brought, it remains a vital lifeline for the local Zeliangrong Naga farmers. The dam site is often shrouded in mist during the early morning hours, offering a mystical atmosphere for photographers. It is a place where engineering meets nature, demonstrating how human intervention can harmonize with a rugged landscape to sustain a community.
