Nelong Valley

Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, India
Nelong Valley is a breathtaking cold desert located within the Gangotri National Park at an altitude of about 11,000 feet. Often compared to Ladakh and Spiti because of its arid landscape and brown mountains, it was opened to domestic tourists in 2015 after being closed since the 1962 war. The vall ey was once a thriving trade route between India and Tibet, used by the Jad people who inhabited villages like Jadung and Nelong. Today, it is a restricted zone under the control of the Indian Army and ITBP, requiring special permits for entry. The terrain is characterized by deep gorges, rugged cliffs, and the Jad Ganga river flowing through the valley. Visitors can see the remains of ancient settlements and the famous Gartang Gali, a 150-year-old wooden skywalk built on a vertical cliff. The valley is home to rare wildlife like the snow leopard and blue sheep. Due to its strategic location near the Indo-China border, foreign nationals are not permitted to visit. The silence and the raw, unpolished beauty of the valley make it a paradise for adventure seekers. No overnight stay is allowed inside the valley, so visitors must return to Harsil or Gangotri by evening. It is one of the most unique geographical regions in the entire Himalayan belt. :
