Pukzing Puk

Mamit, Mizoram, India
Pukzing Puk, famously known as the Cave of Shouting Stone, is the largest and most mysterious cave in Mizoram. Nestled near the remote village of Pukzing, this natural wonder is steeped in local folklore and geological intrigue. According to Mizo legends, the cave was carved out of a single stone u sing only a hairpin by a man of immense strength named Mualzavata. Another popular myth suggests that the cave is haunted by spirits whose shouting could be heard by villagers in ancient times, giving it its unique name. The cave is incredibly spacious and consists of three massive chambers. It is a site of great interest for spelunkers, geologists, and those interested in Mizo mythology. The entrance is wide and welcoming, leading into a subterranean world of stalactites and stalagmites. Inside, the air is cool and damp, and the silence is only broken by the occasional drip of water or the flutter of bat wings. The cave has played a role in many local stories, including one where the legendary character Maurawkela hid a magical drum taken from monkeys. The trek to the cave involves passing through lush bamboo forests and rugged terrain, making it an adventure in itself. The surrounding Pukzing village offers a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the Mizo people, who are known for their hospitality. Despite its fame, the cave remains largely unexplored by mass tourism, preserving its raw and mystical charm. Visiting Pukzing Puk is like stepping back in time, where nature and legend intertwine seamlessly. The echoes within the cave are said to be so clear that even a whisper can travel across the chambers. It is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Mamit seeking something off the beaten path.

Nature's Subterranean Design: The architecture of Pukzing Puk is entirely natural, featuring three distinct chambers connected by narrow passages. The cave spans a width of approximately 25 meters, making it the widest in the state. Each chamber measures roughly 4 square meters in floor area, with high vaulted ceilings that showcase impressive limestone formations. The walls are rugged and textured, displaying the erosive power of water over thousands of years. The natural "dimensions" of the cave provide a sense of grand scale that is rare in the region. The limestone pillars, formed by joining stalactites and stalagmites, act as natural columns supporting the massive stone roof above.
