Quila Phul

Bathinda, Punjab, India
Quila Mubarak, also known as the Bathinda Fort, is the oldest surviving fort in India, with its foundations dating back nearly 1,900 years. This massive structure stands as a majestic sentinel in the heart of the city, having witnessed the rise and fall of numerous empires, from the Kushanas to the British. It is famously known as the place where Razia Sultan, the first woman ruler of the Delhi Sultanate, was imprisoned after her defeat. The fort is built with bricks that date back to the era of Emperor Kanishka, giving it a unique historical texture. Over the centuries, it was occupied by the Hindu Shahis, the Ghaznavids, and later the rulers of the Patiala state. Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the tenth Sikh Guru, also stayed here, adding a layer of religious sanctity to its martial history. Today, the fort is a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Despite being in a state of partial ruin, the sheer scale of its walls and the height of its bastions continue to evoke a sense of awe. It remains a symbol of the strategic importance of Bathinda as a gateway to India from the northwest.
