Overview: The Lucknow Museum, officially known as the State Museum, Lucknow, is a venerable institution, one of the oldest and most significant museums in India, with its foundation dating back to 1863. Initially started with the collection of Colonel Saunders Alexius Abbott, it has evolved into a t reasure trove of artifacts that narrate the history of Uttar Pradesh and the grand period of the Nawabs of Awadh. Evolution: The museum moved through several locations, including the Choti Chattar Manzil and the Lal Baradari (the erstwhile coronation hall of the Nawabs), before finally relocating to its independent building within the Lucknow Zoo premises in Banarasi Bagh. The current building was inaugurated by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1963. Diverse Collections: It is celebrated for its comprehensive and diverse collections, spanning from pre-historic times to the modern era. Key exhibits include archaeological finds, sculptures, paintings, numismatics, and decorative arts. The collections are organized across various thematic galleries.
