The complex is built over the "Garbha Griha," the sanctum san ctorum that marks the spot of the ancient jail where King Kansa had imprisoned his sister Devaki and her husband Vasudeva. It was destroyed multiple times by invaders like Mahmud of Ghazni, Sikandar Lodi, and Aurangzeb, but it was always rebuilt by the faithful. The current structure was constructed with the efforts of Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya and the Birla family. The complex is vast and includes several shrines, a large hall for discourses (Bhagavat Bhavan), and a museum. The atmosphere is intensely spiritual, filled with the sounds of bells, conch shells, and the chanting of "Radhe Radhe."
