The Beatles Ashram

Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, India
Originally named Chaurasi Kutia (84 Huts), this ashram gained worldwide fame after the legendary band The Beatles visited in 1968 to study Transcendental Meditation under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. After the Maharishi left in the 1970s, the ashram was abandoned and reclaimed by the surrounding forest, c reating a unique, evocative, and somewhat mysterious atmosphere. It was officially reopened to the public in 2015 as a tourist attraction and a place of historical significance. Today, the ruins are famous for the colorful and poignant graffiti and murals created by artists and visitors from across the globe, turning the dilapidated structures into a living art gallery known as the "Beatles Cathedral." The ashram is spread over a large area within the Rajaji Tiger Reserve (buffer zone), offering a peaceful, nature-filled escape from the bustle of the main town. (Condensed from 400 words)

Unique Dome-Shaped Meditation Pods: The most distinctive architectural features are the dome-shaped stone meditation huts or kutias, which resemble large, smooth, beehive structures. Each dome was designed for individual meditation and reflection, symbolizing the isolated yet communal nature of their practice.

Dimension: The huts are small, roughly circular structures, only large enough for one person to sit and meditate. The larger central hall (Ved Bhavan) is a prominent, multi-story structure.

Materials and Style: The construction utilized local stone and concrete, but the style is minimal and functional, reflecting the simplicity of ashram life. The current appeal is the contrast between the concrete ruins and the vibrant, unauthorized graffiti art that covers nearly every wall, essentially turning the ashram into a dynamic, open-air gallery.
